Some time ago I heard about a fellow martial arts student who had been pushing herself beyond what was really safe for her physically. She didn’t want to be scolded, kicked out or held back, so she would struggle through any pain she experienced in an effort to do what was being asked of her. Finally one day she just snapped and did the unthinkable: she told her master “no.” She said that she would not do what he was asking her to do, because she didn’t think it would really be wise or safe for her. Instead of condemning her for being so audacious, he bowed and smiled as though she had finally gotten it right. He then praised her for having the courage and wisdom to speak her truth. There are many times in our lives when refusing to grasp for success as defined by others is a sign of inner strength and wisdom, not weakness.
