Daily Inspirational Quote September 27 2014

“The awakened sages call a person wise when all his undertakings are free from anxiety about results; all his selfish desires have been consumed in the fire of knowledge. The wise, ever satisfied, have abandoned external supports.” – Bhagavad Gita The degree to which we are at peace with life is a barometer for our spiritual health. When we’re content and peaceful, it means we’re in harmony with our true selves, our energy is vibrating at a high level, and we’re in tune with spiritual law and divine truth. Anxiety, stress and worry are symptoms of spiritual “dis-ease”. They’re caused by indulging in negative thoughts, habits and addictions that endlessly drain our vitality and distract us from the truth. If we are at peace within regardless of what is happening around us, we can rest assured that we’re in good shape spiritually.

Make it Your Choice

Let go of the thoughts that you need to do, that you need to have, and that you need to be this or that. Embrace the opportunities to choose to do, choose to have, and choose to be. If you’re constantly catching up with your needs, you’re operating from a perspective of weakness. Instead, see the tasks, commitments and responsibilities as things you have chosen, and give your life the positive power it deserves. From all the available possibilities, your choices have brought you to where you are today. Going forward, your choices can take you where you wish to go. Don’t discourage or frustrate yourself by seeing yourself as burdened with needs. Make it your intentional choice to do what you do, and discover your true power and effectiveness. Put energy, joy and satisfaction into your work by choosing to get it done. Add great value to your relationships, your commitments and responsibilities by choosing to honor them with the way you live. Don’t let the perception of need ens

Daily Inspirational Quote September 26 2014

“When Buddhists say, ‘A bodhisattva fears not the result, but only the cause,’ they mean that we must expend the bulk of our energy planting good roots today, rather than fretting about the plants that are already growing from the roots we planted in the past.” – Master Hsing Yunm Sometimes when we’re frustrated or overwhelmed, it’s wise to just ignore the things that aren’t going right and focus on creating new blessings for the future. Once we’ve set a creation in motion and it’s gathered speed and momentum, there is only so much that can be done to affect its course. Instead of racing after a situation to try to control it, we might step back and observe its trajectory and the quality of its journey, and then align what we’re setting in motion now based on what we’ve learned.

Prison of Your Own Making

Are you holding yourself in a prison of your own making? If so, today you can choose to set yourself free. Worries, insecurities, outdated assumptions, and a negative self image can all prevent you from experiencing life at its best. You can let those limiting influences fall cleanly away from your life. The obstacles that life sends your way will continually challenge you, and yet with intention and commitment you can move beyond them. Before you can do that, however, you must set yourself free of the self-imposed obstacles. Raise your vision of yourself above any troubles and shortcomings that may have occurred in your past. This is now, and you owe it to yourself to maintain an empowering view of yourself. If you’ve known a lot of disappointment, there’s no need to fear more disappointment or failure. Just accept that they will occasionally come, and look forward to the great satisfaction you’ll find in working your way beyond them. Choose to set yourself free from defeati

Daily Inspirational Quote September 25 2014

“Don’t flatter yourself that friendship authorizes you to say disagreeable things to your intimates. The nearer you come into relation with a person, the more necessary do tact and courtesy become. Except in cases of necessity, which are rare, leave your friend to learn unpleasant things from his enemies; they are ready enough to tell them.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes I often practice radical honesty, for I believe that relationships will only be as deep and as powerful as people are open and intimate with each other. Nevertheless, I’ve noticed that when I say something that wounds someone, no matter how true or insightful it may be, it doesn’t feel constructive or wise, it just feels regrettable. While honesty is important, if what we desire is love and happiness, we should never be more truthful than we are kind.

Let the new you step forward and make life the best you can imagine. — Ralph Marston

The Mosaic Man

"I am homeless for 25 years, at the mercy of my talent," says Jim Power. Jim found a creative outlet in creating hand-crafted mosaic artwork that he started posting on lampposts in Lower Manhattan's Eastside. Jim's creativity transformed the streets into the "Mosaic Trail." The art, a passion close to his heart, connected Jim to his inner voice. The "Mosaic Trail" became his purpose, his expression of self. The stories in Jim's mosaics provided an identity for people in the Eastside. When the city threatened to destroy his work, the community rallied around Jim to protect the "mosaic trail," now a legacy for the residents. Listen to Jim Power's story as the Mosaic Man...

Daily Inspirational Quote September 24 2014

“All people want is someone to listen.” – Hugh Elliott When I was in training to become a professional medium, one of my greatest teachers often spoke on how powerful it is to simply listen. Not everyone who pursues a reading wants to be shocked and amazed by astounding accuracy and details; some just need to be heard and understood, to feel that someone truly cares and accepts them as they are. While it’s great to be able to predict the future and bring through evidence from loved ones in Spirit, tremendous healing can occur when we simply listen and care.

Savor Your Time

If you rush through life, you miss the best parts. Take your time, enjoy your time, savor your time and make rich, meaningful use of it. Instead of rushing to get as much as possible done, take the time to do things the best you possibly can. Instead of racing to finish, enjoy the journey as you create great value along the way. Being effective is not the same as being busy. Just because something is urgent doesn’t mean it’s important. There are many things that can be done quickly, yet have little value. It’s better to invest your time in one thing that really matters than to waste it on a dozen things that don’t. Let go of the need to skim quickly along the surface. Allow yourself to dive deeply and meaningfully into life’s richness. Your time is precious, so treat it with the respect it deserves. Rise above the anxious hurrying, and make every moment really mean something. — Ralph Marston

A Plan To Make Homelessness History

Each day, roughly 700,000 people in the country are homeless of which some 120,000 are chronically homeless. The 100,000 Homes Campaign has set a goal of placing 100,000 chronically homeless people into permanent supportive housing --- the human welfare equivalent of NASA's race to put a man on the moon. Read on to learn how the campaign is shifting the way cities address homelessness.

Daily Inspirational Quote September 23 2014

If someone is intentionally trying to hurt us, nothing is ultimately more powerful than simply not letting their words or actions get to us. The harder it is to forgive someone, the more powerful it is as well; letting go of anger and resentment and hopefully even summoning compassion is the ultimate in “defeating” our enemies, for then we leave them to their karma while we free ourselves to enjoy new happiness.

Reach Forward

You might not reach your goal today. Yet you can reach a significant part of the way toward it. You may not make as much progress today as you intend. Yet you will make some valuable progress. Don’t you dare be discouraged by what you were not able to do. Instead, be inspired by what you have been able to get done, and by what you’re now in a position to achieve. Even though you’re not able to reach all the way right now, reach. Go ahead, do what you can, now when you have the opportunity. Get started, continue, make some progress, then do it again and again. Small efforts add up to big results when you repeat them often enough. Reach forward, work forward and move forward. You’ve made some meaningful progress, and now is your chance to make even more. — Ralph Marston

Is kindness just an old-fashioned value celebrated in kindergarten and then soon forgotten as one grows older and more ambitious --- or is there more to it? As increasing numbers of people look to live a purpose-driven life, research is beginning to reveal the tremendous rewards that come with living kindly. What follows are some of the most compelling recent studies on the topic of kindness, and the ramifications they hold for ourselves and our world.

Making a New Move - An Excerpt from Love Cycles by Linda Carroll

When we feel disappointed in love or worried in life, most of us move in one of two directions: either we shut down and push away, or we move closer to seek comfort and care. In our most intimate relationships, our instinctual response is often the opposite of what our partner needs, and it’s here that our willingness to make a new, counter-instinctual move is needed. Ted thrived on social contact. Ellen was private and needed a lot of time by ...

Understanding Your Part in the Trouble - An Excerpt from Love Cycles by Linda Carroll

It’s difficult to have real exchanges with our partner if we’re not clear about our needs and motivations. First we must be honest and listen to ourselves. Then we must be honest and listen to our partner, in good faith. Otherwise, so-called communication is nothing more than an empty exercise. Here’s an example of this dynamic, which played out in two meetings with a couple I saw in my practice. As Rob and his girlfriend, Mandy sat in my office, ...

Freeze, Flee, or Fight - An Excerpt from Love Cycles by Linda Carroll

Our brain is wired for connection. When we begin to love someone, our connection circuitry lights up and dominates. We anticipate the best in our new partner, and we’re rewarded, because each thing she says and does activates the connection center of our brain. We view her actions and intentions and interpret her language through the lens of our positive vision.  As the chemistry of love fades, a second kind of circuitry emerges. It turns out that we’re wired for ...

Daily Inspirational Quote September 22 2014

“Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish.” – Ovid One never knows when an impulse to go somewhere, do something or talk to someone will prove to be a key turning point. By staying open to the moment and honoring those nudges and impulses, we enable Spirit to lead us to the fulfillment of our desires in wonderful, inexplicable ways.

Put Passion

Put passion into what you do, whatever it is. Your passion confers great power, and engages your best abilities, and you can put it into anything. There’s no need to search for, or wait for, or wonder about what will give you passion. Go ahead and give your passion to the moment you’re in. What provides you with passion is your choice to live it. What gives you passion is your decision to allow it to flow into your thoughts, words and actions. Live your life not as a bystander. Live in this world, on this day, at this place as an active participant. Discover how empowering it feels to give authentic passion to the smallest of details. Experience for yourself how great it is to care without holding back. Put passion in this day, in this task, and in this circumstance. Be rewarded with exceptional effectiveness and meaningful achievement. — Ralph Marston

The Amazing Story of Lilica: A Dog Who Lets No Animal Go Hungry

Imagine that you are feeding a hungry dog and instead of eating all of the food you brought for her at once, she picks up the bag and brings it home. Every night, she eats only part and take the rest with her. One day, you follow her home--four miles away-- and discover that she is bringing the bag of food you prepare her to share with the other hungry animals in her extended hungry family, including dogs, cats and chickens. This is the true story of Lilica, whose generosity will inspire you.

Daily Inspirational Quote September 21 2014

“If you want to see what children can do, you must stop giving them things.” – Norman Douglas It’s no wonder that young people seem so callous about the future, so indifferent to opportunities and so careless with their possessions, for these days virtually everything they could want is just handed to them. If an uncle gives them a job and they get fired for not showing up, and then their father quickly finds them another one, they’ll probably just do the same thing all over again. If, however, they have to work to get the job in the first place, they will value it for being hard won. Like most things in life, we value that which has been earned or learned.

The Importance of Mindfulness In Children

While meditation practices are usually associated with adults, there is a growing movement focused on implementing mindfulness practices to optimize the health, well-being and happiness of children. From helping kids thrive in school, to being an effective intervention with autism, to even serving kids that are suffering from cancer and other serious health conditions, meditation is showing that it can have a significant long-term positive affect on child development.
